H: HEAD - Get out of your head and into your heart/body

Updated: Oct 18, 2025

Living in our heads means that we do the things other people have told us is the right thing to do. Sometimes we do things from guilt or feel that we should. Living in our heads means we react to the things going on around us, rather than paying attention to what is happening inside of us.

Many of us have been taught to push through things that make us feel uncomfortable without paying attention to what our heart/body is feeling. Not being true to what we are feeling can make us feel anxious, worried, stressed or even cause panic attacks or dis-ease in our bodies.

For example: When I talk with my friend and ask her how’s she doing, half teasingly she answers “Pushing through.” Pushing through feels like what it implies: duty, obligation, and should’s. Pushing through leaves little room for ease, joy and happiness.

If we continue to push through our lives and not do anything that feels right to us, we will eventually turn into martyrs. I can tell you from personal experience that martyrdom is a joyless, painful existence not only for the one pushing through but also for those around them.

I first learned this from a Franciscan priest, Fr. Richard Rohr. He referred to it as the 1st and 2nd Half of Life. I indeed was very much living in the 1st Half of Life…my head. Working 24/7, accomplishments were king in my life.

Later I discovered this shifting wasn’t a new concept at all - only new to me. Motivational teacher, Wayne Dyer referred to this as transiting from the morning to the afternoon of our lives.

My continued research revealed his thinking probably came from Carl Jung who stated, “What was true in the morning will become a lie in the afternoon. What was great in the morning will be little in the evening.” All of this shifting has zero to do with age by the way.

We simply begin listening to ourselves. We begin to transition from ego centered lives to purpose driven ones. Along with that comes inner peace and connection with self. Remembering who we were created to be!

Is there an area in your life that you can identify could benefit from shifiting from the head to the body/heart mindset? Do that!  It's Self-Care.

So now we are aware that we are better off taking cues from the heart and the body and giving the brain a break, but HOW do we do that?

If you need support let us know. We have many resources to share.
