Thanks to the hard work of many Evolve to Live supporters, Self Care Awareness Month was established on the National Calendar each September to be recognized as Self Care Awareness Month since 2017.
Why is this a big deal? Well at the time, there was very little being said about the importance of making oneself a priority in our own lives. In my case, after finding out I had codependency tendencies, I definitely had put everything to do with me, my wants, needs, and desires on the back burner to ‘help’ everyone and everything around for the past fifty years. This patterning of lack of self care in my life lead to what some call a nervous break down or mid life crisis.
What it really was - an opportunity to stop - pause - REST - and decide how I wanted to move forward in my life. Not from a place of being told or obligation or it’s the ‘right thing’ but from a place of checking in with myself, feeling into my gut and heart and moving from there. It doesn’t happen quickly or easily as The Velveteen Rabbit can attest to.

In fact, for me, I ended up tithing myself the number of years I had been on this planet, to live from an internal place of knowing rather than an external place of being expected. I struggled with comments like, “You just need to get a job!” Had anyone understood, they would have known that working 24/7 was one of the codependency addictions I was trying to recover from.
The Evolve to Live team developed an easy acronym to help remember that taking care of ourselves is the most important thing we can do not only for ourselves but for those around us.
Learning to say NO when necessary, say YES only when we want to and developing clear direct communication skills all while learning about & how to implement boundaries are just some of the ways that we can do to take care of ourselves. IT’S YOUR’E TURN!
To learn more or if you need support let us know. We have many resources to share.
A H.E.A.R.T. for Change was developed into an online self study course. For a short overview, each week during September, I’ll take each letter and explain what we mean and how you can implement it into you life. Here’s an overview.
H. Head: Get out of your head and into your body.
E. Eyes: See things from a different perspective.
A. Advocate: Stand up for yourself!
R. Rest: Guilt free!
T. Trust: Yourself!
In the cartoon below, the head wants more likes and attention, while the heart want to be lovved and love itself.
